Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
November 10, 2024-November 16, 2024

Join Earth Spirit Naturalist Guides into the heart of wild South Georgia. In this excursion, you will embark on a multi-day canoe trip in the largest blackwater swamp in North America! The 440,000 acre Okefenokee Swamps provide stunning scenic and wildlife viewing opportunities. You will have a great chance to encounter American alligators, various wading birds, red-shouldered hawks, turtles, and more! Each day will be filled with adventure and wildlife as you canoe from platform to platform. Paddle through open lily-decked prairies and cypress trees decorated in Spanish moss. View stunning sunsets then be serenaded by barred owls as you fall asleep in your tent under the stars. After our swamp trip, we will explore one of Georgia’s coastal islands such as Jekyll or Cumberland Island. This is the adventure of a lifetime!

Nights not spent in the Okefenokee Wilderness will be spent at the Okefenokee Pastimes Campground.

Expedition Overview

Multi-Day Okefenokee Swamp Paddle Trip

This is the primary component of the trip.  The first three or four days will consist of a back-country multi-day paddle trip in the Okefenokee Wilderness, depending on which platforms/camp locations we are able to secure a permit for.

*Overnight permits can only be secured two months in advance, so the exact route of our paddle trip is tbd, but will for consist of a two or three night paddle trip.  The paddling distance can average 7-10 miles per day, at a very slow, wildlife viewing pace!*

We will begin our journey at the main entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston, GA.  There we will paddle along the Suwannee Canal to our destination for the first night, which will be at one of the several platforms located in the swamp’s interior.  During the paddle, we will have great wildlife viewing opportunities of American alligators, wading birds, and more.

Experience the heart of wild South Georgia in the greatest way possible!

Georgia Coastal Island Trip

The day after our Okefenokee Canoe Trip, you will be drive by Earth Spirit staff to one of Georgia’s coastal islands!  Whether it is taking the ferry to Cumberland Island, or staying at Jekyll Island, you will explore beaches and Georgia’s wonderful costal ecology!
